Description

CHESHIRE

  • Male, black and tan standard
  • 4.5 years
  • Neutered
  • Adoption fee is £350

Dexter is a truly gorgeous boy with a big heart, and nothing makes him happier than curling up for cuddles with his favourite humans. His family have made the difficult decision to rehome him after welcoming a new baby, and they feel he would thrive in a home where someone has more time and attention to offer him.

He is described as a gentle, affectionate softy with the people he knows and trusts. However, Dexter can find strangers—both inside and outside the home—quite overwhelming and is reactive. Because of this, any potential adopter should expect that it may take several introductions before he feels safe and comfortable. With patience, understanding, and the right management, he does settle.

Dexter is also reactive to other dogs on walks. He has already made progress with the support of a behaviourist, and he’ll need someone willing to continue this work in his new home. The good news is that he genuinely enjoys training and responds well to it.

He has previously lived with a female dachshund and got along well with her, even though she wasn’t particularly playful. His current owners feel he would be happiest as an only dog, but they’re open to considering a calm, confident, older female dachshund if the match feels right.

Dexter is crate trained, though as he’s matured he’s been trusted with the crate door open and manages well. He can be left alone for up to four hours and is also a relaxed, easy traveller in the car.

Requirements in a home:

  • Calm rural or semi-rural home with a garden
  • Children 14+
  • Only dog preferred, however there is the possibility to live with a calm, confident female dachshund, after successful introductions
  • No cats
