Milo is currently living in a foster home where he has had surgery for his IVDD and is responding well – he can now feel pain in both back legs and we are hopeful that with continued care he can continue to make a good recovery.
Milo is a gentle and affectionate standard dachshund (he weighs around 12 kg). He is a friendly, easy-going boy who gets on well with the other dogs in the foster home and loves being with the foster’s teenage grandchildren. He is a typical dachshund who is loyal, clever, and full of character. He is always on the look out for treats, so is extremely trainable.
Caring for a disabled dog can be a rewarding and special experience. We don’t know how completely Milo will recover, but he is a determined boy and we want to give him every chance. The Red Foundation will continue to pay for all his medical costs relating to his IVDD and we are looking for a family who has the time to spend helping him with his therapies and taking him to physio and other appointments. He still needs help to wee at the moment, so his new owner will need to help him express urine – this is straightforward and we can support. If you have the love and time to support Milo but have never cared for an IVDD dog before, please don’t be put off as we will help you all the way! We don’t know whether Milo will recover fully or not, but we do know that we will support him all the way.
Before his IVDD episode, Milo was an active and busy boy. Although well-socialised, he has never lived with other dogs and his foster told us that he snapped at her when she got too close to his feed bowl – this was very soon after a traumatic move, so could have been a result of shock and fear, but his new family should supervise him when being fed or with high-value treats to be on the safe side.
