Koa is a beautiful boy who is searching for a forever home following a relationship break up. His owner is having to leave him on his own more often and therefore has made the tough decision to rehome him.

He is described as a trusting and loyal boy who loves to be snuggled on his owner’s lap. His favourite pastimes include walking in the countryside and sunbathing in his garden. Koa is good with adults he knows, but has shown some resource guarding behaviour towards toys. His owner has worked with a behaviourist and this behaviour has reduced and is managed well. Koa has previously guarded food but since having an operation on his knee in December 2024 this has stopped. Koa still hops occasionally, but the vets can find no reason for this since the operation. For these reasons we are looking for a home with no children or visiting children and which is confident in managing resource guarding behaviour or someone willing to learn. Full behaviour support will be given by The Red Foundation behaviour team.

Koa has bitten on 3 occasions, twice at a daycare facility when they attempted to put a harness on him and once when a friend of the owner stroked him whilst he was asleep. Koa gives clear signals when he is uncomfortable and he has never bitten his owner.

He is described as being excitable when people he knows enter the house although he can be barky, he settles quite quickly, however this takes longer with strangers and will need to be managed. He loves to walk and is happy to meet other dogs of all sizes, although sometimes he has a dislike of entire males. He has never lived with another dog, but we feel he does have the potential to live with a calm neutered female after successful meets.

Koa can cry in the car, usually on the way to a destination, but not on the way home. He currently sleeps with his owner at night, although slept comfortably on the sofa when a dog sitter stayed with him. He isn’t crate trained but is happy to be left alone for up to 4 hours with free roam of the house.

Requirements in a home:

  • Adult only home – no children or visiting children
  • A rural or semi-rural location with a garden for Koa to sunbathe in
  • A quiet lifestyle with minimal visitors
  • Someone with experience in resource guarding or willing to learn and work with The Red Foundation behaviour team
  • Could live with another dog subject to successful introductions – calm female preferred (must be neutered)
  • Could be OK with a confident dog savvy cat
