Otto first came into our care in February 2025 after his owner sadly fell ill and could no longer care for him. An attempt was made to rehome him privately, but unfortunately this didn’t work out. When Otto was returned to us, his owner noted that the time away had unsettled him. Once a playful, cuddly boy, he began to show signs of stress and, on occasion, would snap when feeling fearful or uncomfortable.
After a further rehoming attempt, Otto was returned once more after biting his new male owner. This gave us the opportunity to step back and get him the extra support he needed. Otto was placed in a rehabilitation centre where he has been carefully assessed and supported.
Since then, Otto has made fantastic progress. He’s gained confidence and is showing more of his happy, playful side again. While he can still be wary of strangers at first, he usually warms up quickly often becoming overexcitable, bouncy, and a little mouthy once he feels safe. Otto is very food motivated and loves to learn, making training an enjoyable way to keep his clever mind engaged.
Otto does need confident handling. If an adopter is anxious or unsure, Otto may feel the need to take control of the situation, which in the past has shown itself in pushy behaviour or even biting. He cannot be babied – he needs calm, clear boundaries, and someone experienced enough to guide him with consistency. His behaviours stem from fear and anxiety, not malice, and with the right guidance he really does flourish.
He has been muzzle trained and is very comfortable wearing it. This is something that will need to continue in his new home. The Red Foundation’s behaviour team will be on hand to support his adopters during the settling in period and going forward to give everyone the best chance of success.
The rehabilitation centre describes Otto as a wonderful, loving, super intelligent dog with boundless energy who is eager to use his brain. With patience, confidence, and the right environment, he is ready to start the next chapter of his life – and he’ll make a fantastic, loyal companion for the right family.
Otto is housetrained, crate trained and loves a car journey. He is looking for an active home with someone who has experience with dogs who have had a history of fear-based reactions or someone who is confident and willing to work with our behaviour team. They need to be confident or he will try to rule the roost! He’s incredibly loving and social with people and dogs alike, but due to his high prey drive, we’d recommend a home without small furries or cats. Due to his biting history we are looking for a child free home.
Requirements in a home for Otto:
- Quiet and calm, adult only home
- A confident owner familiar with dogs who have bite/mouthing history
- No children
- No cats
